How to look after your watch
TAKE your watch to a qualified professional for regular servicing. How often you need to do this depends on the type. Follow the manufacturer’s recommendations, but bear in mind that if you have used your watch in extreme environments the time between servicing should be reduced.
CHECK water resistant watches annually to make sure that the case is still watertight. If you take your watch into a swimming pool or go in salt water, make sure that you rinse it afterwards - although stainless steel is highly corrosion resistant, it is not impervious to attack.
NEVER wind a watch on your wrist - take it off first. Winding it on your wrist puts a lot of unnecessary pressure on one part of the case and mechanism.
PUT your automatic watch on a winding unit if you don't wear it regularly. Make sure the unit is programmable and doesn’t run constantly. If an auto-winder runs 24 hours a day, the watch will be fully wound the whole time, which is like running a car at full throttle and causes excessive wear.
AVOID extremes of temperature. You shouldn’t need telling not to wear your watch in the sauna. But sudden changes in temperature can be worse than extreme highs and lows. If you are lying on a hot beach and then jump into cold water, the thermal shock can damage the case. Diving watches should cope, but a watch with a 30m resistant watch probably won’t.
CLEAN your watch. There is a build- up of natural dirt from the body and the environment. Wipe your watch down every week or two to remove grime which grinds away at the case and the strap. After all, you wouldn’t wear the same socks every day without cleaning them.
KEEP your watch cool and dry when you are not wearing it. Damp does horrible things, especially to leather straps. It can help to wrap your watch in anti-moisture paper.
